There’s a very specific type of panic that happens at 35,000 feet when you realize the one thing you need is sitting on the counter at home. Whether I’m flying for fun or working, it’s a type of panic I’ve become very familiar with. After years of left behind necessities, I finally created this checklist of items I used to forget but always seemed to need while traveling. These are the 12 items I never fly without.
1. Flushable Wipes
After hearing enough horror stories from other flight attendants about airplane and hotel bathrooms, I started carrying flushable wipes everywhere I travel. They’re one of those things you don’t think you need until you really need them, and now I refuse to fly without them.
2. Tea Tree Oil Makeup Wipes
People often ask me what my post-flight routine looks like, and my answer to that question has changed many times throughout my years of traveling. The one item, however, that has always been part of my post-flight routine is a tea tree oil makeup wipe. This is one of the products that really feels like it cleans the airplane air off my skin after a long day of flying.
3. My Stanley Mug
My Stanley mug goes everywhere with me. It’s practical, it’s aesthetic, and it keeps my tea warm for hours. Whether I’m drinking coffee before an early morning flight, sipping hot chocolate on a cold day, or just trying to hydrate while traveling, my Stanley mug makes travel days feel a little warmer and calmer.
4. Silk Sleep Mask
This is an item that I learned the importance of very early on. It doesn’t matter whether I’m traveling for work or leisure, I always have my silk sleep mask with me. You never know when you’re going to be seated next to someone who likes to stare out the window for the entire 5am flight so it’s best to just be prepared.
5. Portable White Noise Machine
As you may have guessed, flight attendants love their sleep. And when we’re on a layover, getting a good night of uninterrupted sleep is a must. Whether it is due to noisy neighbors, construction, or kids running up and down the hall all night, I have had many sleepless nights in hotel rooms that leave me feeling grumpy and worn out. This machine isn’t always enough to drown out every noise that might wake you at a hotel, but it eliminates enough of them for me to keep it with me on every trip.
6. Compression Socks
Compression socks are designed to support circulation during long periods of sitting or immobility, which is why I always wear them during longer travel days. They’ve become one of my go-to essentials for work and leisure trips.
7. Portable Charger
My portable charger has saved me more times than I can count during delayed flights, long layovers, and airport chaos. Between boarding passes, maps, music, texting, and travel apps draining my phone battery all day, having a charged phone feels less like a luxury and more like a travel necessity these days. Plus, not having to rely on a spare airport outlet that actually works is a game changer.
8. Sunscreen
SPF is one of the few things I never skip, especially during travel days when my skin already feels stressed from dry cabin air and changing climates.
9. Moisturizer
Flying can feel incredibly dehydrating some days. Because of this, I always have my moisturizer with me on trips. Keeping a good moisturizer in my bag helps my skin feel refreshed after hours spent in airports and airplanes.
10. Hand Sanitizing Wipes
Airports and airplanes are touched by thousands of people every single day, so for a germaphobe like me, hand sanitizing wipes are a must. They’re an easy way to quickly wipe down tray tables, armrests, and anything else that feels questionable during travel days.
11. A Good Claw Clip
A good claw clip can make life so much easier while traveling. Whether I’m sitting on a hot plane, running to my next gate, or just trying to look presentable after a long day of airport chaos, my claw clip has always had my back… or rather, my hair.
12. Jewelry Case
For the girlies like me who like to accessorize on the go, having a jewelry case is a must. I never go on a trip without mine. After years of lost necklaces and earrings, I have learned that organization is the best way to keep track of my special jewelry.
After spending so much time in airports and airplanes, I’ve learned that travel can be exhausting, chaotic, and unpredictable, but having a few comfort items with me always makes the experience feel a little easier and a lot more enjoyable. Whether I’m working a flight, heading on a quick trip, or navigating another long airport day, these are the travel essentials I consistently reach for. If you’re building your own carry-on survival kit, I hope this list gave you a few ideas to make your next travel day smoother, cozier, and a bit more luxurious.
